What is a Hearing Aid?

Hearing aids work by making sounds louder or, in some cases, by suppressing certain sounds, like background noise, so that other sounds, like speech, are easier to understand. There are many types and styles of hearing aids, but all have similar parts:

  • A miniature battery that powers all parts of the hearing aid.
  • A microphone that picks up sound and changes it into a signal.
  • An amplifier that makes the signal louder.
  • A speaker that sends the amplified sound into the middle ear.
